Goldielocks and Her Search for Birth Control

I have noticed lately that many people are completely uneducated when it comes to any birth control other than "the pill" (and condoms of course). Being one of the many women who is not on "the pill" I've decided to educate the masses on some of the forms of birth control and my experiences with a few of the other methods which brought me to my choice in birth control.

We all know that Condoms are the best way to protect yourself from a STD. Unless you are in a relationship and have had "the Talk" with your partner you should always use a condom no matter what birth control you use to protect yourself from an STD. Keep in mind the majority of condoms out there are latex... so if you are allergic to latex (which I am) be proactive and make sure you have a stash of none latex condoms.. You know.. Just in case ;)

My first experience with birth control was "the pill". I never had any real problem when taking the pill, aside from remembering to take the pill. I do not have any set routine so I could never remember to take the pill at the same time every day.

Being the responsible young woman that I am I went back to the drawing board, since what's the point of taking something when I can't remember to take.

I went back to my doctor and gave the Nuvaring a spin. Nuvaring is a small, flexible ring a woman inserts into her vagina once a month to prevent pregnancy. It is left in place for three weeks and taken out for the remaining week each month. The vaginal ring is commonly called Nuvaring, its brand name.

The Nuvaring was better in the fact that you only need to remember it once a month, but my experience from it was less then fun. I suffered from massive migraines due to the hormones which didn't fade at all after giving my body a couple months to adjust so back to the drawing board I went.

I researched the birth control shot (Depo-Provera) but I absolutely hate needles (before I get any messages on this the needles used for tattoos and the needles used for injections are completely different yes I'm perfectly fine getting tattoos but when it comes time for a shot I regress to a 3 year old who needs someone there to hold my hand and on occasion has passed out.) so based on my needle phobia alone I never gave it a shot.

To the Planned Parenthood website I went and found a plethora of information on what looked like every birth control method known to man. My criteria in my search was simple, I wanted something that I didn’t have to remember or think about, that was not going to over load me with hormones, that was not permanent, that was super effective and that did not involve any needles. What I found was IUD.

So, WTF is an IUD? The letters IUD stand for "intrauterine device" (ParaGard and Mirena). An IUD is a t-shaped device that is inserted into the uterus by your doctor to prevent pregnancy for up to 12 years. It starts working right away. The IUD alone is best for women who have only one long-term sex partner. The Mirena IUD may reduce period cramps and make your period lighter. On average, menstrual flow is reduced by 90 percent. For some women, periods stop altogether. BINGO!!

Off to my doctor I went to be told, " An IUD is recommended for women who have had at least one child." she continued on telling me how she would not give me an IUD since I have no children; Umm the whole point of this is to remain child free, back to the internet I went in search of a new doctor who would give me an IUD.

Needless to say I found a doctor who wasn’t as narrow minded as my previous doctor.
